ABOUT MICHELE S. LANE
Michele S. Lane was admitted to practice law in California in 1984. She is a member of the State Bar of California and is also admitted to practice before the United States District Courts for the Northern and Central Districts of California.
Ms. Lane received her B.A. in Humanities from Pennsylvania State University, cum laude, in 1974 and her J.D. degree from Golden Gate School of Law in 1984, Mediation certificate in 1995, completed the Organizational and Relationship System's Coaching Program in 2007 from Coaches Training Institute. She has over thirty years of experience in law and business related positions including sales executive for IBM, Honeywell Information Systems and Rolm Corporation, in-house general counsel for a national retail software franchisor, managing partner in private law practice and in-house counsel for a non-profit corporation in the education finance industry. Ms. Lane has served as a member of the Board of Directors for a privately held software corporation in the health care industry and a member of the Board of Directors for a non-profit agency in Contra Costa County and as a judge pro-tem for the Small Claims Court of Appeals in Contra Costa County.
Ms. Lane has practiced extensively in the areas of civil litigation; bankruptcy, commercial transactions and consumer finance and counseled both for-profit and non-profit clients in employment and corporate business matters. She also has served as in-house counsel for two different companies managing legal affairs in various areas of the law including all employment related issues. While in-house counsel Ms. Lane served as a member of the Executive Staff, participating in all major business decisions, strategic planning, and budgeting and attended and participated in Board of Directors meetings and advised board members on various issues.
Since 1993 the primary focus of Ms. Lane's practice has been in employment law with specific emphasis on conducting neutral investigations, training on harassment and discrimination prevention, drafting policies, formulating procedures and practices to be followed and overseeing compliance with state and federal anti-discrimination laws. She has provided advice with respect to the hiring and termination of employees, negotiating and drafting of severance and release agreements, negotiating and drafting of employment contracts and non-compete agreements. Since 1998, Ms. Lane has conducted over 90 investigations into workplace complaints for public, private, profit and non-profit employers. In addition, Ms. Lane has coached and trained executives, supervisors, managers and employees on issues relating to performance, anger management, conflict resolution, communication skill building and harassment prevention.
Ms. Lane is a member of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Panel for the Contra Costa County Superior Court and has served as a mediator in sexual harassment and other employment related cases. As Adjunct Professor at John F. Kennedy School of Law she taught courses in "The Law of Sexual Harassment" and has lectured extensively on that and related subjects to a variety of audiences including bar associations, law schools and professional and business associations.
Ms. Lane has served as a Board Member and Past President and continues to serve on the Board of Directors of the Contra Costa County Bar Association Employment Law Section.
